Background
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for more than 33,000 new cancers in the United States each year.[1] In Oregon, according to the Oregon Health Authority, each year 540 people are diagnosed with an HPV-associated cancer. An additional 3,500 cases of cervical pre-cancer are diagnosed in Oregonians ages 21-29 each year. Although a safe and effective vaccine is available, HPV infection remains prevalent with an estimated 80 million Americans currently infected with HPV and an additional 14 million new infections occurring each year.
Despite the known link between HPV and numerous cancers, vaccination rates in Oregon and across the United States remain low. In Oregon only 46% of adolescents have completed the HPV vaccination series. In some counties, fewer than 25% of adolescents are up to date.[2]
